CFA Will of Gersham Chapman

THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I Gersham Chapman of the Town of Columbia being weak in body but of sound memory and understanding thanks be to God for the same, do make and ordain this to be my last will and Testament in manner and following --- Imprimis my body I wish to be decently interred at any convenient place my friends may think proper, and as touching such worldly estate which it has pleased God to bestow upon me I dispose of, the same in manner and form following. ------------------------------------------------------------

I Give devise and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Chapman two female Slaves to be by her Selected from those I own to her for and during the Term of her natural life.----

Item 2- I give devise and bequeath unto my beloved Daughters Sophie Chapman Sarah Chapman Rebecca Chapman Eleanor Chapman and Anna Chapman the remainder of my Slaves to them and their heirs and assigns for ever share and share alike and after the death of their mother I give and desire to them the two female Slaves above bequeathed together with their future issue to them and their heirs and assigns for ever.----------------

And should it please the Almighty to take either of my said five Daughters out of existence previous to their becoming of age or marriage it is my will that her or their share or portion of the above mentioned bequests as well as the future bequests to them, shall belong to the Survivor or Survivors of my said five Daughters her or their heirs and assigns for ever share and share alike.------------------------------------------------------------

Item 3.- I give devise and bequeath unto my said wife Mary Chapman the one sixth part of the balance or residue of my estate to her and her heirs and assigns for ever.----------

Item 4- I give devise and bequeath the residue or balance of my Estate unto my said five Daughters Sophia Rebecca Eleanor and Anna [sic] to them and their heirs and assigns for ever or to the Survivor or Survivors of them should either of them die before becoming of age or marriage---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Item 5- Having already given to my other beloved Children Mary Ann Glenn, Hariet [sic] Reid and Joseph Chapman what I consider to be their full share or portion of my Estate is the reason why I have not bequeathed them any Legacy in this will.

And lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my Daughter Sophia Chapman Executrix and my Son in Law Doctor George W. Glenn and Son Joseph Chapman Executors to this my last will and Testament hereby revoking and annulling all wills by me at any time heretofore made declaring this and no other to be my last-------------------------------------

Witness my hand and Seal this Seventeenth day of April in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty two.---------------------------------------------------------------------------

RICHLAND DISTRICT ) Green who being duly sworn made oath that he saw Gershan Chapman sign seal publish pronounce and declare the forgoing Instrument of writing to be his last will and Testament that he was then of sound and disp(?)ing mind according to the best of this Deponents knowledge & belief and that he with Nathaniel Ramsay & P. M. Butler at the request of the Testator in his presence and in the presence of each other witnessed the due execution thereof.------------------------------------------------------------

According to the Gersham Chapman Family Bible: Gersham CHAPMAN was born 29 Mar 1763 in Berkshire MA, married Mary CAREW 29 Oct 1788 in Charleston SC, and died 01 Feb 1835. Mary Carew was 1765 in Charleston SC and died 23 Jan 1844 in Newberry SC. They were the parents of 12 children: Joseph, Mary Ann, Catherine, Sophia, Harriet, Sarah, John, Sarah II, Rebecca, Eleanor, Ann, Joseph II. More detailed information from the Gersham Chapman Family Bible is available from the Columbia Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society. The Gersham Chapman Family Bible was the subject of an article in Vol. 13 of the Columbia Journal (put out by the Columbia Chapter of SCGS).
