Amos served in the Revolutionary War enlisting in the Continental Army Jan 1776 as a resident of Cumberland Co PA and was discharged in Jan 1781. He was a Private and a Sergeant on the Pennsylvania line with Capt. Adams, Brattons and Millers Co. Col. William Irvine's 7th Pennsylvania Regiment. He moved to Kentucky as early as 1784. Notes for Amos CHAPMAN

RESEARCH NOTES:

Amos is probably descended from the Chapman Family that came from Yorkshire, England to Bucks Co Pennsylvania in 1684. John Chapman (RIN 438) born 1626 came with his wife and family. Among his descendants are many Amos Chapman's. Buck's Co and Cumberland Co Pennsylvania are close and Chapman’s seemed to have moved back and forth. Cannot find a definite connection of this Amos to Bucks Co, but have clues.

Amos named his only son John. Amos' son John named his first 2 boys William and John. Amos' father's name was probably a William or John. Both William and John were names of Chapman's in the area that were of an age to be his father.

A John Chapman, too old to work is in Shelby Co Ky. in 1814, 1816 is with Amos on the Tax Rolls. Could this be his father???

An Amos Chapman of Bucks Co Pa, "Non-fighter, Friend" British Sympathizer convicted of Treason in 1778 and 1783. In 1787 there is an Amos in Canada. (Pa Archives).

I have quite a bit of informationon Chapman family of Wrightstown Bucks Co, Pa. They have been well documented and researched. The family names are similiar ie: John, William, Samuel, Benjamin etc. Found one Amos as part of this family (too late to be ours). Amos, Charles, Jesse and Martha are children of Edward Chapman (b abt 1762)who md Rachel Blackfan in Buckingham Pa May 14,1794.

Rachel's Sister Elizabeth md a Fell). Edward is the son of Joseph Chapman and Ann Fell. (Joseph is son of Abraham and Susan Olden Chapman, Abraham is son of John and Jane Sadler Chapman the immigrants.)

An Amos Chapman ("his family all well but he is much afflicted with the phthisic") is mentioned in the Pa Magazine of History and Biog. Vol 52. p 93 in a letter home to Pennslvania by George Bradshaw. They are

living in Pelham, Canada in May 1815. Mentioned as related is "old Elizabeth Fell" unable to tell if others mentioned are related, but this is the only Chapman.

Found in the Will of John Meredith of New Britian Twp, Buck Co Pa, but in 1787 living in Anapolis Co, Nova Scotia Canada, from monies due him (as a British sympathizer exiled to Canada) he leaves to his friend Abraham Chapman, Abraham’s wife Mary and Abraham's son John an inheritance. These Chapman's are also living in Annapolis Co, Nova Scotia. Will was witnessed by Amos Chapman among others. This is the other Chapman, not ours. (enc 488-Schumann G)

Hypothesis????????:

William Chapman d 1763 Cumberland Co Pa

??? son John (the Wagoneer) disappears from Cumberland Co Pa 1795-1800. He is found in the Tax Rolls

from 1753-1795. Assume same John all those years.

John died or went to Jefferson Co Ky with his sons, (Amos and others) he could be the John in Shelby

Co, Ky, 1815 who is too old to work?????

Is this how the above is related to my Chapmans below???:

son: Amos Chapman (occupation ?) b Pa abt 1746 d Shelby Co Ky 1820; is in Jefferson Co Ky in 1800 with wife and small children. Children b: Ky 1784, 1791, 1794 ?twins, 1794-1800. child b: Pa 1789.

Did Amos come to Jefferson Co Ky with Abraham as early as 1782? Get married in Ky ? Have Hannah in 1784? Maybe he returned to PA and got remarried in PA and had Jane in PA in 1789. Then returned to Shelby Co to stay before 1791). Or maybe his wife returned to PA to have her second child.

gr son: John Chapman (Master Carpenter) b 1791 Kentucky d 1860/70 Indiana md 1813 Kentucky

gg son William Rodman Chapman (Carpenter) b 1814 Kentucky d 1901 in California. md 1) 1835 Indiana, and 2) 1863 Iowa.
